ABOUT ME

My name is KITH Marady. I grew up in Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia. My father died in car accident when I was 4, so I lived with my mother, two older sisters and an older brother. My mother was a primary teacher whose salary could not support her family. To survive, all the members of my family had to work to support the family. We worked as farmers during the rainy seasons and in dry seasons we worked as seller: got up at 3 am to make desserts for selling at school. We faced unsecured and got scared sometimes because some men threatened my mother to get married with and/or to be their mistress but my mother always refused. To protect the family from threats, my mum never slept well at night. She kept the long knives and axes near the door. People in village looked down at her because she was a widow. They thought widow was weak, debtor and would always ask for help from others.

I started school when I was five and have been the top student since grade 6. My mother did not have time to see what I was doing at school because she was very busy with earning money to support our family. Besides going to school in the morning, I took the cows to the rice farm in the afternoon. When I was at the field with the cows, I always collected the wood for kitchen fired or fished and brought them back home. Taking cows was my obligation because my sister and brother were in secondary school; they did not have time to go to the field, so I had to go the field every afternoons. When I attended secondary school, my mother sold all cows and took such money to buy clothes, bicycle and study's materials for our education.

I did well at schools as the top student and class monitor, so my family and teachers always supported me. To get free education and study’s materials, I assisted my teachers in accounting and calculating grades for students. My mother was a low paid teacher at her school and always asked the school to allow us to get a free education fee and materials.
Luckily, I got interviewed and selected to live in the Harpswell Foundation in 2006 and started my bachelor of laws at Royal University of Law and Economics at the same years. At the Harpswell Foundation, I was trained in leadership, news analysis and English. Moreover, I had opportunities to meet many famous and powerful women leaders in Cambodia and from abroad.

In 2011, I won an exchange program to the U.S.A for one year, attended Bowdoin College, Maine. I registered for International Law and Introduction to International Relations. The Learning and Teaching Centre of Bowdoin College helped me improve my writing, reading and speaking and got support from peer tutors. Moreover, I had opportunity to work with the McKeen Center to volunteer at Portland Housing Authority and joined Bowdoin’s trip to go to DownEast, Maine.

In 2017, I won an exchange course for my postgraduate study and attended Lund University, Sweden for 6 weeks. I earned great experience in participating in postgraduate levels, got to know new friends from different countries such as Romany, Estonia, German, Japan, China and South Africa. Besides attending the class, I traveled to several countries and visited the capital city of Sweden- Stockholm, Helsinki-Finland, Oslo-Norway, Paris-France, Hamburg-Germany and Copenhagen-Denmark.
Anything I can do to contribute to this society, I am always happy to do so!!! Be a part of development.

I have had 4 to 5 years’ experience working in NGOs, legal service and bank. Besides working for full time, I always participate in civil society engagements and volunteer in communities.
